Any Act of Terror Is a Road to Hell – An Islamic Perspective

Post by islamicforum »

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

In recent times, we see individuals and groups committing acts of terror in the name of Islam. They target innocent people, bomb public places, and spread fear. Some even dare to call this “jihad”.
From an Islamic point of view, any deliberate act of terror that targets innocent people is a path leading to Hell, unless the person repents sincerely and Allah chooses to forgive them. Let’s explore why.

1. Sanctity of Human Life in Islam

Islam gives extraordinary importance to human life:

(i) The Qur’an teaches that killing a single innocent soul is like killing all of humanity, and saving one life is like saving all of humanity (meaning).
(ii) Believers are commanded not to kill unjustly, not to transgress limits, and not to commit corruption on earth.

Life is an amanah (trust) from Allah. You did not create it, so you have no right to take it unjustly.

2. What Is Terror in the Light of Shari‘ah?

By “terror” we mean:

(i) Deliberately killing or injuring innocent people.
(ii) Attacking civilians, worshippers, students, workers, travelers, etc.
(iii) Spreading fear among the public for political, ideological or personal goals.
(iv) Destroying homes, markets, schools and hospitals without justification.

This is the exact opposite of the Prophet’s teachings. He strictly forbade harming non-combatants, women, children, monks, elderly people, and even animals and crops in warfare. How then can killing ordinary people in buses, streets or offices ever be justified?

3. Why Is Terror a Major Sin?

a) Murder of the innocent

The unjust taking of life is counted among the greatest major sins. The murderer:

(i) Carries the burden of the victim’s blood.
(ii) Faces the anger and curse of Allah if he does not repent.
(iii) May be punished in this world (qisas) and/or the next.

There are narrations that the first issue to be judged between people on the Day of Resurrection will be matters of bloodshed. The victim will demand justice from the killer.

b) Spreading corruption on earth

Terrorism is not only murder; it is fasād fil-ard – widespread corruption and mischief on earth. It:

(i) Breaks families.
(ii) Ruins security.
(iii) Damages the image of Islam.
(iv) Causes endless cycles of hatred and revenge.

The Qur’an strongly warns those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption, mentioning severe punishments in this world and the next.

c) Betrayal of trust and treaties

Many acts of terror involve:

(i) Breaking agreements.
(ii) Betraying the safety given to people living under Muslim protection or in Muslim lands.
(iii) Violating the laws of countries where Muslims live and benefit from security.

Islam honours promises and treaties. The Prophet (peace be upon him) condemned betrayal and treachery, especially in matters of safety and life.

d) Suicide and self-destruction

Modern terrorism often includes suicide bombings. Islam clearly prohibits suicide. Authentic narrations state that whoever kills himself will be punished with the method of his suicide in the Hereafter, unless Allah forgives him. Imagine adding to that the weight of killing many others.

So a suicide attacker combines multiple major sins:

(i) Suicide.
(ii) Mass murder.
(iii) Spreading terror.
(iv) Betrayal of trust.
(v) Misusing the name of jihad.

4. Misusing the Concept of Jihad

Jihad in Islam has a deep and noble meaning:

(i) Striving against one’s own ego.
(ii) Struggling with wealth, time and effort for the cause of Allah.
(iii) Defending the oppressed when legitimate Islamic authority and clear conditions are present.

It has strict rules: no killing of innocents, no mutilation, no treachery, no targeting of non-combatants.

Terrorists pick a few verses or slogans, ignore all conditions and prophetic guidelines, and declare war on everyone. This is not jihad; it is rebellion against Allah’s law.

5. Is There Any Hope for a Terrorist?

In principle, Allah can forgive any sin if the person makes sincere tawbah before death:

(i) Realizes the crime.
(ii) Deeply regrets it.
(iii) Stops the wrongdoing completely.
(iv) Does their best to repair what they can.
(v) Resolves never to return to it.

But there are important points:

(i) The right of the victim remains. On the Day of Judgement, the oppressed will be given their rights from the oppressor’s good deeds.
(ii) The murderer may face heavy punishment in the grave and in Hell before any possible forgiveness.
(iii) No one can commit crimes thinking, “I will sin freely and Allah will forgive anyway.” This attitude itself is a form of disrespect to Allah.

So practically, a person who chooses terrorism is throwing himself towards the Hellfire unless he repents with full sincerity and urgency.

6. Worldly and Spiritual Consequences of Terror

Apart from the Hereafter, terrorism brings disaster in this world:

(i) For victims: Death, injury, trauma, poverty.
(ii) For families of victims and attackers: Grief, stigma, broken homes.
(iii) For the Ummah:
– Backlash, suspicion, hatred and discrimination.
– Restrictions on religious freedoms and charities.
– Loss of trust in Muslims and in Islam.
(i) For the terrorists themselves:
– Hard hearts.
– Loss of mercy.
– Living in constant anger, paranoia and lies.

Instead of opening doors for da’wah, terror closes hearts and makes people fear Islam rather than love it.

7. A Message to Angry and Confused Youth

If you feel:

(i) Anger about injustices against Muslims.
(ii) Pain when you see oppression, occupation, or abuse of our brothers and sisters.

Your anger itself is understandable – but what you do with that anger is the test.

Islam does not tell you to be passive. It tells you to:

(i) Help the oppressed with halal means.
(ii) Support them through charity, advocacy, awareness and lawful political efforts.
(iii) Educate yourself and others.
(iv) Strengthen the Ummah through knowledge, unity and good character.

Do not let Shaytan push you from pain to hatred to violence against innocents. That path leads away from Allah, away from Paradise, and towards destruction in both worlds.

8. From an Islamic perspective:

(i) Deliberate acts of terror against innocent people are among the gravest of sins.
(ii) Such actions combine murder, corruption, betrayal, and often suicide.
(iii) They are roads leading towards Hellfire unless a person truly repents and Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgives.

Those who commit terror have no connection to the Islam of the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which calls to faith, justice, mercy and peace.

May Allah protect us and our families from extremism in all its forms, guide the misguided back to the straight path, honour the true scholars and sincere workers of this Deen, and make us all ambassadors of peace, justice and compassion.

Wa Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
