Thinking positively about others promotes trust and unity within the Muslim community. This is an important Islamic obligation, which Muslims have forgotten and it is the root cause of all evil. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“None of you will believe (in Allah) until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 13; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 45)
Obligation
The third important obligation on Muslim is Husn-e-Dhan (حسن الظن). Meaning having a good opinion or thinking positively about others and Allah, is a core Islamic teaching.
Allah commands believers to avoid suspicion and negative assumptions about others:
“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other.” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12)
This verse highlights that thinking ill of others can lead to sinful behavior like backbiting and spying. Believers are encouraged to give others the benefit of the doubt.
Punishment
- Damaged Relationships:
Negative assumptions create rifts, foster animosity, and disrupt the harmony of the Muslim community (Ummah). - Loss of Barakah (Blessings):
Persistent suspicion and mistrust may lead to Allah withdrawing His blessings from one’s relationships and personal life. - Separation from Allah’s Mercy:
A person who constantly thinks negatively of others and Allah distances themselves from Allah’s mercy.
Reward
Having Husn-e-Dhan purifies the heart, increases empathy, and fosters good deeds.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The best of people are those whose hearts are pure, and their words are truthful.” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 6642; Hasan)
- Inner Peace: A positive outlook reduces stress and anxiety, bringing emotional and mental well-being.
- Harmonious Relationships: Thinking well of others fosters strong, healthy relationships and mutual trust.
- Barakah (Blessings): Maintaining a good opinion attracts Allah’s blessings in all aspects of life.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“I guarantee a house in the highest part of Paradise for the one who makes his character excellent.” (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4800; Hasan)
