Islam provides a balanced approach to dealing with enemies. It neither promotes blind hatred nor unjustified friendship. Instead, it teaches justice, wisdom, and patience in dealing with opponents.
1️⃣ Who is Considered an "Enemy" in Islam?
🔹 In Islam, an enemy is not simply someone from another faith or a personal rival.
🔹 The Quran defines enemies as those who:
✔ Oppress and harm Muslims (physically or socially).
✔ Fight against Islam unjustly.
✔ Violate peace treaties and agreements.
✔ Spread corruption and injustice.
📖 Quran (60:8-9)
"Allah does not forbid you from being kind and just to those who do not fight you because of religion or expel you from your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. But Allah forbids you from making allies of those who fight you because of religion, expel you from your homes, and aid in your expulsion."
🔹 This means Muslims are only allowed to oppose those who are unjust and oppressive, not those who peacefully coexist.
2️⃣ Islam Encourages Justice Even With Enemies
📖 Quran (5:8)
"O you who believe! Stand firm for Allah as just witnesses and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness."
🔹 Even if someone is an enemy, Muslims cannot be unjust toward them.
🔹 Islam forbids revenge and oppression, even against those who harm Muslims.
✔ Example: During the Conquest of Makkah, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forgave the Quraysh, including those who persecuted him and his followers.
3️⃣ Enemies Can Become Friends
📖 Quran (41:34)
"Repel evil with what is better, and your enemy will become as close as an intimate friend."
🔹 Islam teaches Muslims to return hatred with kindness, which can change the hearts of enemies.
🔹 Many of the greatest Sahaba (companions) of the Prophet (PBUH), like Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) and Khalid ibn Al-Walid (RA), were once his enemies but later became defenders of Islam.
✔ Example: A Jewish neighbor used to throw garbage at the Prophet (PBUH). Instead of retaliating, the Prophet (PBUH) visited him when he was sick, which made the man accept Islam.
4️⃣ Islam Prohibits Hatred Based on Religion or Race
📖 Quran (49:13)
"O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another."
✔ Islam forbids racism, tribalism, and religious hatred.
✔ A person's character and actions determine their worth, not their background.
📖 Hadith: The Prophet (PBUH) said:
"A true Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands others are safe." (Bukhari)
5️⃣ How to Deal with Enemies in Islam?
🔹 1. Forgive When Possible
📖 Quran (3:134)
"Those who control their anger and forgive people—Allah loves those who do good."
✔ If an enemy does not harm you, Islam encourages forgiveness and reconciliation.
🔹 2. Defend Yourself If Necessary
📖 Quran (22:39)
"Permission to fight is given to those who are being wronged. Indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory."
✔ Islam allows self-defense but prohibits aggression.
✔ Muslims can protect their rights and dignity, but must not exceed limits.
🔹 3. Seek Peace If Possible
📖 Quran (8:61)
"If they incline towards peace, then incline to it as well and rely upon Allah."
✔ Islam prefers peace over conflict.
✔ If an enemy stops hostility, Muslims should accept peace and move forward.
📌 Conclusion: Islam Teaches Justice, Not Blind Hatred
💠 Islam does not promote enmity—it promotes justice.
💠 A true enemy in Islam is someone who oppresses, spreads corruption, and fights against truth.
💠 However, Islam always encourages justice, kindness, and reconciliation where possible.
Examples from Islamic History: How Muslims Dealt with Enemies Wisely
Islam teaches that enemies should be dealt with through justice, patience, wisdom, and, when possible, reconciliation. Here are some examples from Islamic history where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions showed remarkable wisdom in handling their enemies:
1️⃣ The Forgiveness of the Quraysh (Conquest of Makkah, 630 CE)
🔹 The Quraysh were the biggest enemies of the Prophet (PBUH).
🔹 They persecuted Muslims, forced them into exile, and tried to kill the Prophet (PBUH).
🔹 However, when the Prophet (PBUH) conquered Makkah peacefully, he forgave them instead of taking revenge.
📖 He said:
"Go, for you are free!" (Ibn Hisham)
✔ This act of forgiveness transformed many enemies into Muslims and showed that Islam was a religion of mercy, not revenge.
2️⃣ The Story of Wahshi ibn Harb – The Man Who Killed Hamza (RA)
🔹 Wahshi was a slave who killed Hamza (RA), the beloved uncle of the Prophet (PBUH), in the Battle of Uhud.
🔹 Later, Wahshi accepted Islam and came to the Prophet (PBUH) full of regret.
🔹 The Prophet (PBUH) did not take revenge but told him to live righteously.
✔ Lesson: Even if someone commits a great sin, Islam allows repentance and transformation.
3️⃣ The Kindness to the Jewish Woman Who Threw Garbage
🔹 A Jewish woman used to throw garbage at the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) daily.
🔹 One day, she stopped, and the Prophet (PBUH) visited her home to check on her health.
🔹 She was shocked by his kindness and eventually accepted Islam.
✔ Lesson: Responding to hate with kindness can turn enemies into friends.
4️⃣ Abu Sufyan – From Enemy to Companion
🔹 Abu Sufyan was one of the biggest enemies of Islam and led several battles against Muslims.
🔹 However, after seeing the Prophet’s mercy during the conquest of Makkah, he accepted Islam.
📖 Prophet (PBUH) declared:
"Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan will be safe." (Seerat Ibn Hisham)
✔ Lesson: Even the strongest enemy can change with wisdom and patience.
5️⃣ Treaty of Hudaybiyyah – Choosing Peace Over War
🔹 In 628 CE, the Prophet (PBUH) signed a peace treaty with the Quraysh, even though its terms were unfair to Muslims.
🔹 This treaty prevented war and gave Islam time to grow peacefully.
🔹 Within two years, many people converted to Islam, proving that wisdom is more powerful than war.
📖 Quran (48:1)
"Indeed, We have given you a clear victory."
✔ Lesson: Sometimes, patience and diplomacy bring greater success than fighting.
6️⃣ The Mercy Shown to Prisoners of War
🔹 In the Battle of Badr, the Muslims captured 70 Quraysh prisoners.
🔹 The Prophet (PBUH) treated them kindly and allowed them to earn their freedom by teaching Muslims to read and write.
📖 Quran (76:8-9)
"They give food, despite their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, saying: ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah; we seek neither reward nor thanks from you.’"
✔ Lesson: Islam teaches kindness even to enemies, as this can change hearts.
📌 Conclusion: Islam Encourages Justice, Mercy & Transformation
💠 Islam does not promote blind hatred but wisdom, justice, and reconciliation.
💠 The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) showed that even the worst enemies can become friends if treated wisely.
💠 Islam allows self-defense but forbids cruelty or revenge.
