When performing Hajj, pilgrims can choose one of three types based on their personal situation and intention: Tamattu’, Qiran, and Ifrad. Each type involves a different way of combining or separating Hajj and Umrah.

1. Tamattu’ (تَمَتُّع)

Definition:
Tamattu’ refers to performing Umrah first, then Hajj later, all within the same Hajj season, but with a break in between.

How it's done:

  • The pilgrim enters into Ihram for Umrah.

  • After completing Tawaf, Sa’i, and shaving/trimming the hair, the pilgrim exits Ihram.

  • On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, they enter into a new Ihram for Hajj.

Best for:
Pilgrims coming from outside Makkah, especially those arriving early and staying for both rituals.

Sacrifice:
Required.

2. Qiran (قِرَان)

Definition:
Qiran means performing Umrah and Hajj together, without leaving Ihram in between.

How it's done:

  • The pilgrim enters into Ihram with the intention for both Umrah and Hajj.

  • Performs Umrah (Tawaf and Sa’i), but does not shave/cut hair or exit Ihram.

  • Continues in the same state of Ihram until Hajj rituals are complete.

Best for:
Pilgrims who bring their sacrificial animal with them or want to combine both rituals in one continuous journey.

Sacrifice:
Required.

3. Ifrad (إفْرَاد)

Definition:
Ifrad involves performing Hajj only, without doing Umrah beforehand.

How it's done:

  • The pilgrim enters into Ihram with the sole intention of Hajj.

  • Performs all Hajj rituals as usual.

  • No Umrah is done before or during this Hajj.

Best for:
People living in or near Makkah, or those who have already done Umrah recently.

Sacrifice:
Not required.

Quick Comparison Table

Type Umrah Performed? Ihram Break Between? Sacrifice Required? Best Suited For
Tamattu’ Yes Yes Yes Foreign pilgrims
Qiran Yes No Yes Bringing animals
Ifrad No No No Local residents

Conclusion

Understanding the types of Hajj helps pilgrims choose the path that best suits their travel plans and abilities. Whether performing Tamattu’, Qiran, or Ifrad, the ultimate goal remains the same—seeking closeness to Allah and fulfilling this sacred pillar of Islam.
